Another day down

So today was another pretty normal day at work.  Just helped get some project files updated, and worked on their 20/20 program some more.  It was so nice today we all ate out on the patio for lunch.  Lunch is probably my favorite time of the day, not for the food aspect, but to be able to chat with the girls about work and life in general.  Today was one of the designers last day.  She was really nice, and I wish I could have gotten to know her better, but I don't blame her for leaving.

After work I met up with a girl I went to school with, and she wanted to tell me about an organization she's involved in here in Kansas City.  I am really excited to start going to events and meetings and being more involved.  Hopefully I will meet a lot more people and really do some more networking.

So that's all for today.  I'm tired, and need to get more sleep than I did last night.  Until next time...

My Leap List (and Monday's quick update)

Okay so before I get to my 'Leap List', here is a brief update of my Monday...  Back in Raytown, and back to work.  It seems like the days do go by fairly quickly now, and I am getting more and more things to do as the days go by.  Part of it I think is just learning what I need to be doing, or trying to study some of the products that they want me to know just by knowing the finishes or style of the doors.  After work since it was so nice, my dad was able to change the oil in my car and then we went and got some groceries.  Pretty uneventful day I guess...  I just hope this week goes by quickly, so I can spend time with Grant this weekend.

Okay so before I start this 'Leap List', I want to explain to you just exactly what it is if you haven't heard of it before.  Basically it is a list of things you want to do before the next big "leap" in your life.  I have always been a believer of having and keeping goals in your life, and this is just another way of setting goals for myself to achieve.  (these are in no real particular order, just what came to mind)

Megan's Leap List

1.  Find a Job I LOVE!

So my "job" right now is less than appealing.  Not only is it unpaid, but it is residential and kitchens at that.  Now don't get me wrong, designing a kitchen for myself would be great, but when that is all you're doing for other people it gets boring.  I just don't see myself ever really enjoying doing something within the residential design world.  It's a whole other animal than I'm used to.  I don't really care if people think commercial design is boring or not (venting about someone who recently said this to me), it's what I enjoy.  I am glad for this opportunity, if only to further convince myself of where I need to be going in my career path.

2.  Travel More!

It's not realistic at this very moment, but I hope that once number one is achieved I can take some weekends or some time to go back to the Grand Canyon, or go back to Yosemite, or even finally visit Seattle and Portland that I've always wanted to go to.  I also really really really wanna make a trip out to Colorado Springs a few times before Janelle's wedding!  I am so pumped about it!  :-P

3.  Get in shape again!

So college life was great, going out for drinks, eating junk food at 1am at Stanley, etc.  Now its time to get back in shape and be healthy!  This is something I've wanted to do even while I was in college, but we all know how those college budgets are and how hard it is to keep with a good eating schedule while working and going to school.  I definitely wanna get toned up and lookin' good for my best friend's wedding!

4.  Buy a new car!

Yeah, the old Impala is pushing 205,000 miles.  Its past due for me to get a new vehicle, but I'm not ready financially for one yet.  I just hope that it holds out until I get a new job and can afford a car payment.  I would really like to get another sedan, but smaller than my Impala.  I do like the Ford Escape, but it's pretty expensive and wouldn't get as good of gas mileage as say a Focus.  We'll see when that time comes...

5.  Get my own apartment!

So moving back in with my parents after living on my own for a little over 4 years is not the most ideal situation.  But when you don't have a secure job yet, what else is there to do?  I can't wait to be able to be on my own again.  I love my parents, but having my freedom is just so nice.

6.  Get a puppy!

Oh how I love dogs!  No other pets for me, just give me a dog and I'm a happy girl!  :)  I have wanted a dog for a very long time now!  Once I am on my own and established I could see myself having a dog.  Luckily while I'm living at home Ginger (our family golden retriever) is here for me to play with and love on!  :)

7.  Take the NCIDQ!

I really want to be a licensed Interior Designer within the next 5 years, and in order to do so you have to pass The National Council for Interior Design Qualification exam.  Many people don't really know that Interior Design is a professional career that requires licensing in most states.  Design is not only about making things 'look nice', its much more about public safety and being responsible for the end users of the space you've created.  So don't just think it's all fun and games, we actually help you live a better life in buildings!  (or at least most of us do)

8.  Pay off a majority of my student loans!

Ugh, that large number of student loans is lurking over my head.  I can't wait to start paying off that debt, and be done with it!  I know that I will probably be still paying it off by the time I get married (assuming I get married before another 10 years passes by  lol), but I would love to have a decent chunk of it payed off within the next 5 years.  Paying it off early would be great!

9.  Help out more in my community!

So I know I am weird, but I really do enjoy doing volunteer work for my community.  I'm not just trying to do it to look good, I really do enjoy doing things that help people!  I have volunteered for Habitat for Humanity before and it was a really great experience.  Last spring I helped out at the Central Missouri Humane Society (granted it was for a class but it was so fun!), and got to walk shelter dogs.  I want to do more stuff like this in Kansas City and give back.

10.  Keep blogging!

Since being inspired by my very best friend (since kindergarten) I have really enjoyed blogging almost daily.  I think its kind of therapeutic writing out my thoughts, or things about my day, etc.  I want to continue doing this throughout my life, and use it as a sort of written documentation of my life.

Okay, its time for bed sadly.  Gotta get my beauty rest and wake up fresh for work tomorrow.  yay (not)  So until next time...

5 things that I cannot live without!

1.  LOVE!

This is something that is very near and dear to my heart.  Ever since I can remember I have been a hopeless romantic and a sucker for anything to do with true love.  I definitely wear my heart on my sleeve.  Love is something that I NEED in my life.  Not only from my friends and family, but I need that someone in my life who is my best friend and loves me for me.

...and I've found it.  :)  I am so very happy.  It's easy; I don't have to work at it like I have in the past.  It's sincere, true love.  This is the way I always have imagined it to be.  It's so amazing how this all happened and how lucky we are to have found each other.  I feel so comfortable, and I don't have to pretend to be someone else around him.  It's hard to believe that we've been together for almost a year (still have a few months to go), and I still feel just as in love as I did the first time we said it to each other.

2.  FAMILY!

My family is my rock.  They are the ones who have molded me into the young woman I have grown to be.  I will be forever grateful for where I came from and all of the great memories I have with them.  Although we may not be perfect, we are a family and we love each other.

3.  FRIENDS!

My friends are AMAZING!  I don't know what I would do with out my girlfriends!  Although I don't get to see them very often, we do stay in touch and remain the best of friends in all parts of the country.  I don't have a lot of friends, but the few friends that I do hold dear are very important to me!  I love you all very much, and you keep me sane!

4.  INSPIRATION!

I find inspiration everywhere.  Everyone needs inspiration in their life, and I really love looking through images, quotes, etc. to get inspired for a new project.  With pinterest in my life now (lol) finding inspiration, for even dinner, has become a fun experience!

5.  MUSIC!

Anyone who knows me, knows I LOVE love love music.  I am kind of a nerd when it comes to music really.  It's always been something in my life that brings emotions out in me, and just really makes me happy. If I couldn't listen to music, I would be a very sad Megan.

Just a lazy Saturday...

Today is Saturday, and this Saturday has been a nice lazy one.  The only thing that would make it better would be having a certain someone here with me.  :)  I slept in till about nine today, and went in town with my parents to get some groceries and do some other errands they needed to do.  I got to talk to my mom today about how my internship is going, play with ginger, and watch some cable tv (i do miss my cable tv! lol).  Tonight my mom made a roast, and I made my sour cream and dill potatoes for them.  They seem to be a success!  For dessert I suggested we have strawberries and vanilla yogurt.  Yum, was it good!  It's so great to eat good food that makes you feel good too!

Made it through my first full week!

Thank goodness its Friday!!!  and Friday night at that!  :)  I'm pretty glad that I made it through the first full week of my internship unscathed.  Thank goodness all the girls I work with are really nice, and willing to help me out.  I think I'm finally getting comfortable for the most part.  I have really become good friends with one of the new designers.  We have a lot in common it seems, and she is really willing to help me.  Glad I have someone I can talk to there!  Every day at work I just try to stay positive, and tell myself that it will get better.  I know that if I work hard I will achieve my goals.

So this weekend I decided to go to Nevada with my dad.  We got down here around 8pm tonight, and we've just been kind of lounging around watching tv.  I know my mom is really glad to see me and hang out this weekend.  Hopefully I can help get some work done down here this weekend.  Maybe I can even get a White Grill burger this weekend as well!  yum!  I love being down here on 'the farm', especially when the weather is nice.  It's kind of like my get away from the city.  I know its not anything special, but there is sentimental value to this little town in southern Missouri.  And having someone that I love so very much have a connection to this town as well just makes it that much sweeter.  :)

Well, I'm gonna do some pinning and then head to bed.  I'll update you on the details of my weekend by Sunday.  Hope you all have a great and relaxing weekend!

Glad to say that today flew by!

Today the day actually kind of got away from me.  Luckily today I was actually busy all day, even though most of it was organizing things again.  I don't really mind doing this so much, and this was sort of interesting because everything was in Italian.  Well I don't know anything about the Italian language, but I got the job done.  It is a really uber modern kitchen line, and is very pricey from what I understand.  Looks really cool in our showroom anyway.  Today I also was able to get to know everyone a little more, and had a chance to talk to one of the new designers over lunch.  They are all very willing to help me, which is great!  I helped one of the girls with her project by doing some cabinet modifications, and I'm learning more and more about the program they use every day.  It really is a good program for the projects they work on.  I hope I get to do more with actual layouts and designs.

Other than working I haven't really done much of anything today.  Came home and my dad and I had dinner, and then we watched American Idol (well my dad was more interested in the computer than watching this show) and then the presidents address.  Just a pretty chill night.  I guess I better get to organizing more things in my room.  Hope you all have a good evening!

And so the work week begins...

Oh Mondays...  I wish I actually wanted to get up and go to work this morning.  But today actually wasn't all that bad.  There wasn't much for me to do, but I've learned that I just have to make sure I look busy even if I don't have much to do.  One of the girls keeps insuring me that they will get more work for me to do (instead of organizing and filing all day) they're just in sort of a transitional period right now.  Today was definitely better than any of the other days though so far, so it makes me hopeful.

Hopefully this week goes by quickly. I want the weekend to be here again already!  lol  This past weekend was really great, being able to be with Grant and hang out.  As most of you know, I really like to cook, and Grant really likes when I cook for him.  lol  So Sunday night I made us a pretty good dinner.  We went grocery shopping earlier that day and got some pork tenderloin (one of his favorites).  I decided to make some potatoes along with the tenderloin, and came up with this great sauce to go on them.  So I was thinking that I wanted to do something that incorporated dill cause I just love dill.  Basically what I did was mix sour cream, a little honey mustard, a little olive oil to thin it out a bit, just a pinch of garlic powder, salt, pepper, and dill.  Mix all of that up, and then pour over the potatoes and stir.  They were pretty darn delicious, and I've already got requests to make them again.  :-P

Yummy Sunday dinner for Grant and I

Tonight after work my dad and I moved in my old dresser that I had when I was a kid, and so now I have somewhere to put all my clothes that I couldn't hang up.  I got some of the stuff put away, so my room is starting to come together.  I can't wait till its nice and organized; that will make me happy.  I really just have to go through stuff every night after work, and get what I don't need out put downstairs and out of the way.

remember this!

Well I think I'm going to get a few more things put away, then get ready for bed.  Going to bed at midnight and waking up at 7am makes me tired!  lol  My former college self is disappoint.

My new internship, and this weekend

On this past Thursday I started my new internship. So far its not the greatest job in the world, but I'll keep positive about it. I just hope in three months or less I can find another job. (THAT PAYS and I don't have to make coffee for people) I guess I just need to suck it up and keep working hard and networking with as many people as possible.

The great dress I got on clearance! :)
Can't wait to wear it with some
leggings and my favorite boots.

Friday I got to try out a program that they use to spec out their cabinetry. I was able to figure it out pretty quickly so hopefully I will be doing more things on the computer than cleaning up or making coffee. Friday night Grant and I went out for dinner with his aunt and uncle who live here in town. We went to Lulu's Thai Noodle.  I had really wanted to go there, but just hadn't yet.  It was really pretty good! It was nice to see his aunt and uncle again and catch up! Saturday Grant and I spent part of the day shopping. I still need to get some more slacks since I wore jeans all the time at my last job. I was able to find a pair at Target that was a reasonable price. I also got a cute dress on clearance. I don't know what it is but I've really been into wearing dresses more lately. I am and always will be a tshirt and jeans kind of girl, but wearing a dress every once and a while just makes me smile.  Today has been a lazy day.  I've been watching chick flicks while Grant has been on the computer.  Its nice not doing anything on weekends!  I could get used to this. lol

Okay, remember the vanity project I talked about last week.  Well I finally uploaded the photos I had taken so far.  These are the 'before' photos of my vanity.  I haven't gotten a chance to finish it yet, but hopefully it will get done soon.  For now here are some pictures to show you what it looks like so far...

Tuesday/Wednesday, and all that ensues

So today is the last day I "have to myself".  Tomorrow is the big day; I start my internship downtown.  I am anxious to start and see what it will be like.  Wish me luck!

So today I did a whole lotta nothing.  I guess that could be said for yesterday too.  Yesterday my dad stayed home again cause he wasn't feeling great.  We went downtown that afternoon and went to the Rivermarket Antique Store.  If you've never been there, I would suggest you find time to go!  It's four whole floors of antiques!  There was a lot of cool little trinkets and pieces of furniture to look at.  We tried looking for a few other places downtown, but they all seemed to be only open on weekends or certain days of the month.  I think walking around helped both of us feel better.  Today I am still feeling sick though, which sucks since I am starting this internship tomorrow.

Okay, so as any of you know that frequent the internet, or even watch the news within the last week know about SOPA/PIPA.  This site has a great video to better explain what exactly Congress is trying to pass.  Many sites today have "blacked-out" in an act to protest the SOPA/PIPA.  Make sure to let your congressman know that you don't want these bills to pass!  They would greatly change the internet as we know it today.  I know that I would be very unhappy if I wasn't able to frequent this site or this site or even this site.  So please educate yourself on this issue and take a stand!  That's my soap box for the day.

I need to remind myself of this more often.  Lately I have been feeling a little bit in a slump, and I think it's because not everything has been going the way I'd like it to be going.  I know that things will eventually turn around and I will be able to have my own place and great job, but for now I have to just work through this.  Well I think that's all I've got for today.  Tomorrow I will try and update you guys on how my first day goes. If not tomorrow I will by the weekend.  Hope you all have a wonderful rest of your Wednesday!

And so it begins...

What is almost worse than packing?  unpacking.  ugh!  Today I was able to get most all my clothes back on hangers and up in my closet.  Since I don't have a dresser anymore I'm going to have to use some of my organizing bins for stuff that doesn't go up on hangers.

This afternoon I was able to start stripping the paint off of my vanity.  It was just so nice outside today I was able to do all of that outside.  I hope I can finish stripping it tomorrow and then sand it down to get it ready for paint.  As I am stripping the paint off I'm realizing how beautiful most of the wood is, so I may just put a clear coat on it.  Once I get this piece all done I will post the pictures, and kind of give you the step by step process if you ever need to refinish a piece of furniture you have or buy at an antique store.  It's really not that hard to do, and its very inexpensive to do yourself.

Tonight I plan on trying to relax a little bit, so I'm going to keep enjoying my low key night.

Yes, I am home!

Wow what a weekend!  I guess I'll start from the beginning...

Saturday Grant and I were up early waiting for my parents to get here with the SUV and Trailer, and I got a call just before 10:00AM.  Their car was acting funny, and there was some smoke coming out of the vents, so they had to pull over just 20 miles outside of Columbia.  So we rushed over to meet them, and we got a new alternator and battery for my dad's car.  Luckily that was all it needed, and my dad knew how to install it back in and everything.  Once we got in to Columbia it was about lunch time, so we went to Flatbranch for some burgers and choke's n cheese.  yum!

Finally at about one we started packing stuff into my car, Grant's car, and my parent's car and trailer.  Unfortunately not everything fit, so we had to come back again today.  We got back in KC about 7pm, and had dinner around 8pm.  Today it was just my mom, dad, and I and there wasn't really too much left, so we were only there for 4 hours getting the last bit and cleaning as best we could (my roommate is still living there for a little while longer, so I couldn't do a thorough wipe down on everything).  I am so glad to be moved out of there!  Although I am stuck living at home with my dad, it is definitely better than the place I was at.

Tomorrow I'm planning on going through stuff, and getting things put away that need to be and whatnot.  I've got my bed all set up (with my new bed spread yay!) and my tv all set up so that room is starting to come together.  I am so tired and sore I just want to go to bed.  So I think tonight will be an early night for me and I hope I get to sleep in too.  Although it never fails that I wake up at 7:30ish every morning.  O well I'll have to start waking up early for work again soon enough.  That's all for tonight!

This is it! KC here I come!

So today is my official last day of work at MU Campus Facilities.  It's bittersweet.  I know I am moving on to the city I love, but I really do love working here.  I'm really going to miss working with my boss Tina; she is great and I loved getting to know her.  I know we will stay in touch.  So today I'm just finishing up a few things for her, and handing back over the project I have been working on (the new Patient Care Tower) for several months now.  We also swung by a few projects that I was in charge of to see how the installations are going.  I'm sad I won't get to see them right when they get done.  I will definitely have to come back and visit some time soon!

Yesterday I did a lot more packing, and that is the main reason why I didn't write a blog post last night.  I still have some more little things to pack up, but really the bulk of it is ready to go!  yay!  Grant will be here tonight after he gets off of work, so we're gonna go out for dinner and probably catch a movie.  I'm sure he's glad this is the last time he has to drive out to Columbia!  It's been kind of hectic to see each other while I was still in school.  It will be so nice to be in the same city and be able to see each other on a more regular basis.  Tomorrow morning my parents will be here with their trailer, so I sure hope all my stuff will fit in there, plus Grant's and my car.

but that's easy enough to change

Okay, so today I was browsing Target's clearance online, and I saw that this great lamp is WAY on sale!  Originally $125 and you can pick it up now for only $43.75!!!  I love tripod lamps (probably because they remind me of the old architectural lamps), but I go back and forth between this style for my living room or the big "swoop" lamp as I like to call it; like this one from Crate & Barrel.  That one is obviously WAY more expensive, and since that tripod lamp is on such a great discount I may have to get it.  :D

I want to write more, but I am just busy trying to tie things up at work and once I get home I will be busy packing and hanging out with my guy, so adios for today!  I'll leave you with this...

Re-blog from January 2011

I decided to re-blog this post from about a year ago.  I love this post, and I didn't want to lose it even if I was deleting my previous blog.  Enjoy!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

from:  January 2011

So my current living room leaves much to be desired...  Granite, I am still in college, but hey a girl can dream right?  Right now I have been in love with grays and yellows.  I dunno what it is but I just can't get my mind off of that color combination.  Unfortunately I am not taking a design studio course this semester, so I don't really have that outlet to create and design.  Therefore I hope to do a lot of conceptual planning and designing (that hopefully I can include into my design portfolio).

So back to the gray and yellow and my dream room.  The wall art to my left is from Modern Dose and I just love it.  I think it would look great along side this couch from CB2 and also this great chair with ottoman from Design Within Reach which is always a mainstay when I go looking for furniture.  I love to pick pieces that are neutral so that if you're not IN LOVE with the same accent color you chose to begin with, then you can easily go out and buy a few throw pillows and other accessories to give your space a different look.  This way you don't limit yourself with the furniture you decide to purchase.

Now for the fun part, finding the perfect accessories for my "yellow look".  I found these great throw pillows at CB2 as well.  The difference in textures of the pillows are great.  It gives the eye a bit to play with, instead of using all flat colored pillows.  I also enjoy bringing in hints of natural colors that you would see, for example, in some floral arrangements that you may have throughout the year.  I'm all for doing onochromatic schemes, but using splashes of complimentary colors really livens up the space.  Now for a great rug to tie together the sofa and the two mid century modern chairs.  I found this great one at CB2.   It's a fun pattern that brings everything together.

Now for some side tables, a coffee table, and a sofa table to display all of your personal items and decorations.  One thing I love to do is use a buffet or credenza as a sofa table.  It gives you a little bit more depth (so more storage inside) and allows for more trinkets and displays on top.  I found this gorgeous one on Lunar Lounge Design's Etsy Shop.  Using vintage pieces intermixed with new pieces is a great way to play with different styles. Next I found these side tables from Hudson Furniture Inc. which are reclaimed wood logs.  These gorgeous raw wood pieces really make the room feel warm and inviting.  For the coffee table I would like to bring another wood element, but something a bit more contemporary.

When I pick paint, I usually go with one of two brands, Benjamin Moore or Pittsburgh Paints.  Being an interior design student I tend to be a bit more conscious and sensitive to the fact that we should be using green products.  That's why in a lot of my designs I use re-purposed furniture and elements that can or have been recycled.  So, most paint companies have green paint lines, but I just really like all of the research and background information those two companies provide.  For the main paint color on the walls I chose to use Benjamin Moore (which I recommend you use Natura® Zero-VOC Paint) color Chantilly Lace for your trim, color Ice Cube Silver for your walls, and color Concord Ivory for your ceiling.  I really like using a neutral color on the walls, and then adding a pop of color on the ceilings.  It's unexpected, because most homeowners don't think to paint their ceilings a different color other than white, but it's just another "wall" for you to use color on so use it!  Benjamin Moore's website has great tools and ideas to get you inspired for your own home.

Now for some flooring, which I have chose to use natural cork flooring.  Cork is a great product because it is rapidly renewable, has great acoustical properties, and is water impermeable.  It has the look of a hard surface floor, but has a softer feel.  I love using this product just about anywhere I possibly can, and it really is very versatile.  I found this product at Duro-Desgin.com which has many colors to choose from, but I really like the natural look of the cork.

Moving on we get to the curtains, which I found at Anthropology.  I love this bold pattern in yellow on white.  Simple yet striking pattern to bounce off the gorgeous light gray wall color.  The tree pattern ties in all of the natural and wood elements I have brought into the room.  I just love these curtains!

And finally we have some cute and fun accessories.  The yellow bird candle holderwhite lotus candle holderteal blue and metal wall artblack vasesyellow rubber box vase, and silver connected vase are all from CB2.  These pieces are all different in their lines, which creates interest in each piece.  Although the pieces vary in style and shapes they really reinforce the color pallet and bring the space together as a whole.  I really like how the teal blue wall art piece makes some of the yellow aspects really pop.  The vases from CB2 are really fun and different.  The black vases bring a lot of different size variations in and of themselves.  The yellow vase is fun, and brings in more straight lines that we have in our furniture.  Lastly we have our connected silver vases.  I love these types of vases, because it really makes each flower a focal point.  This piece would be great on that mid century sofa table.

I found some other great accessories at one of my favorite websites, Etsy.  If I were to say that I was obsessed with this site, that would be an understatement!  I love that all of the items on there are either
handmade, vintage, or supplies that you would need to create your own creations.  So from Magalerie's Etsy Shop I found this great
"Keep Calm Carry On" wall art.  This british "anti-scare" message from WWII has become a pop art phenomena in recent years, and I love Magalerie's take on it with the white frame and the white letters on a wood background.  I also found this group of paper cut map art from StudioKMO's Etsy Shop that I just adore.  It's so simple, but so

striking as a group of four.  This fine art photograph from Amelia Kay Photography's Etsy Shop to the right, and also to the left from Marca La Grenouille's Etsy Shop.  These two pieces tie into our color scheme, and also bring in that natural element that we have ongoing in the room.  Floral photography is always nice to have as wall art.  The next two photos are from Pretty Petal Studio's Etsy Shop on the right, and Ben the Butterfly Guy's Etsy Shop on the left.  Just gorgeous stuff!

And now for a few more final touches that I found from West Elm.  A Dandelion Pillow CoverYellow Dotted Pillow CoverPure White Ceramic VasesHoney Comb Inspired Vase, and a Picture Frame Ledge.  These pieces are simple and stunning when bought together.  I love how everything has a natural feel to it, which is a huge part of how I design.  I want to respect nature and bring it indoors.

If I were to design my own living room this would have to be a very close match to what I would actually buy.  I love how the modern lines in the furniture play off of the more whimsical and natural elements I chose for the accessories.

So I plan on doing another 'actual' new post later today, but I wanted to get this posted so I can delete my previous blog site.   No promises, but I will try!

Best,
